What drives the price of custom metal work
The real factors behind the price of a custom railing, gate, fence or staircase in NYC — and how to get the most for your budget.
Custom metal work is priced by the job, not by a catalog. Here are the factors that move the price up or down, so you can make smart choices before you ask for a quote.
1. Size and linear footage
More feet of railing or fence, wider gates and more stair treads mean more material and more welding. It's the biggest single driver.
2. Design complexity
Straight vertical pickets are fast to build. Scrolls, curves, rolled rails, custom ornaments and mixed materials take far more labor.
3. Material
Mild steel is the most affordable; aluminum and especially stainless cost more for material and welding time.
4. Finish
Shop paint is least expensive. Powder coat and hot-dip galvanizing add cost but greatly extend life outdoors — often worth it.
5. Site conditions
Brownstone stoops, curved stairs, upper floors with no elevator, or core-drilling into stone all add install time. Easy access keeps costs down.
6. Permits and drawings
Structural work, new stairs and some exterior work need drawings and permits, which add time and professional fees.
How to save
- Choose simpler picket patterns and let one detail be the star
- Repair and repaint instead of replacing when the metal is sound
- Bundle work (gate + fence + railing) into one job
- Send photos and rough measurements up front for a faster, tighter quote
